Get ready for a thrilling musical experience at the 2024 Oz Manouche Festival with Djangonui, a dynamic trans-Tasman collaboration showcasing the crème de la crème of New Zealand and Australian gypsy jazz talent. This extraordinary group was born from an impromptu concert at the 2023 festival and features New Zealand guitarists Sam Cooke and Richard Ashby. Their passion for Django Reinhardt and gypsy jazz music melds seamlessly with tunes from the New Zealand songbook and original compositions by some of Australasia’s finest musicians. Joining them are the brilliant violinist and vocalist Phoebe Haselden and the exceptional bassist Anthony Irving.
Meet the Artists:
Sam Cooke: A guitar virtuoso, Sam has been immersed in music for most of his life and fell in love with Gypsy Jazz in 2008. A seasoned performer, educator, and Gypsy Jazz enthusiast, Sam has been a key tutor at New Zealand's Gypsy Jazz Workshops and a mainstay with Wellington's Hot Cafe. He has graced the Oz Manouche stage since 2013, participating in numerous jam sessions, and plays a guitar he crafted himself.
Anthony Irving: Hailing from a rich musical heritage, Anthony is a third-generation Australian with deep Kiwi roots. His grandfather, Louis Irving, left Palmerston North in the late fifties to establish a music career in Sydney. Anthony continues this legacy, performing jazz and Gypsy Jazz across Canberra and beyond, and recently supported guitarist Denis Chang on his 2023 Australian tour.
Phoebe Haselden: Known as the "jazz kitty cat," Phoebe has been enchanting audiences with her violin since the days of mullets and double denim. A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, she discovered her true calling in jazz while studying in France. Phoebe has performed with top Australian jazz musicians, and along with her husband, Morgan Haselden, forms the Mimosa Duo, captivating audiences from cruise ships to the Opera House. Despite a brief hiatus following the birth of their daughter in 2021, Phoebe is back and ready to swing harder than ever.
Richard Ashby: Growing up in a musically rich environment in southern New Zealand, Richard was surrounded by the sounds of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club de Paris. After exploring various musical styles, he rekindled his love for Gypsy Jazz during his jazz studies in Christchurch. Since moving to Sydney in 2008, Richard has played with numerous gypsy jazz groups, including Spyglass, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2025.
Join us for an unforgettable performance by Djangonui at the 2024 Oz Manouche Festival, where the spirit of gypsy jazz will come alive with the talent and passion of these remarkable artists. Don't miss out on this musical journey that promises to swing and sway your soul!
