Australia’s Festival Of Jazz Manouche
OzManouche 2024
OzManouche is a festival of gypsy jazz, acoustic-based jazz and swing music popularised by Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grapelli, and the Quintet du Hotclub De France.
The OzManouche Festival returns to Brisbane at the Brisbane Jazz Club in Kangaroo Point from September 26th to 29th. It will feature artists from Europe, New Zealand, and Australia.
In a break from our tradition, we have moved the festival from its usual November timeframe to new dates of 26th to 29th September 2024.
As a special feature, this year, we have made the violin a focal point, with several prominent violinists performing across two stages.
This year, performers include Parisian violinist Daniel John Martin in a musical pairing with Ian Date on guitar. Australian-born, Berlin-based violinist Daniel Weltlinger. Djangonui is a special project featuring New Zealand guitarists Sam Cooke and Richard Ashby (Spyglass) with violinist Phoebe Haselden (Mimosa) and bassist Anthony Irving (The Gypsy Jazz Project). Last but not least, Brisbane's Gypsy Cats.
Festival patron Ian Date will once again assume the role of MC and will hold court with a selection of guest artists for each evening's finale.
In addition to the main stage performances, OzManouche will host emerging artists and community jam groups performing acoustically on the river deck of the Brisbane Jazz Club with the scenic city skyline and Brisbane River as a backdrop. This performance space draws inspiration from the Luthier's Stage at Festival Django Reinhardt in France, aligning with the vision of the late festival founder, Ewan MacKenzie, who aimed to provide a platform for emerging musicians and foster an inclusive community of gypsy jazz musicians in Australia.
Performing on the River Deck Stage this year are Toowoomba Gypsy Jazz, the Sydney Gypsies, the Hot Club of Hobart, led by violinist Charlie McCarthy (Django's Tiger, Twin Fiddles Project), and emerging quartet from Sydney, Coucou Zazous,
Lastly, OzManouche is delighted to offer instrumental workshops hosted by this year's feature artists. These workshops will provide musicians of all levels with valuable insights and skills into the gypsy jazz genre.
